There’s no better job in the world than being a sports journalist. You get to travel the world and talk to a bunch of amazing people. That’s how I’ve spent my time over the past seven years. This time, my journey has brought me to Japan as I’ve been covering Joshi Extreme Takeover’s RISE Grand Prix.
Want to talk about talent? The women this tournament have been absolutely spectacular. Now of course, you’ve got your usual suspects. The JET Champion, Nina Sanada, has been proving why she is at the top of the company. Guest Tarah Nova has been ripping it up as well. Some others that have caught my attention? Vanessa Santiago, Saint Saito, Kimiko Hayabusa, and Ai Moe.
Oh yeah! One other wrestler has captured my attention as well.
Let’s talk about Midori Miyamoto for a little bit. I was actually introduced to Midori’s work a few years ago. Midori was originally trained out in Cali, where I live. So I’ve had the honor of watching her first year’s matches. She was really green back then. Even still, you could tell that she would become something greater.
Midori? She’s always been a scrappy wrestler. And she’s never been afraid to speak her mind. I think that’s what I appreciate about her the most. She’s not going to hold her tongue and she’s not going to hold her punches either.
Now many people, including myself, wondered how Midori would look after training with Natsuko Aimi and Merlot Ayano. They are two of the best joshi wrestlers in the world, and two of the most hard hitting.
I think the young woman has answered those questions. She’s just as spirited. She’s just as vocal. And now? She’s able to hit you even harder.
Now truth be told, Midori’s RISE Grand Prix has been a little bit shaky. She’s wrestled for a two to three years, but I believe this is the first tournament she’s been in. And boy, the RISE Grand Prix isn’t your run of the mill shindig. It’s been a lot of matches in a relatively short time…
Even still, I think Midori has done quite well. As a competitor, I’m sure she’s wanted to do more. That’s just the kind of wrestler is; the kind of wrestler her mentors are.
However, there’s a big silver lining. Look at the people Midori has defeated during the course of this tournament. Candice Blair. That’s the current JET Academy Champion—and Midori pinned her cleanly. Rachael Frost. Rachel led Block B for a period of time. Kimiko Hayabusa. Ms. Hayabusa was leading Block B before she faced Ms. Miyamoto. Vanessa Santiago. She’s had a very strong tournament.
As far as her loses? Well, many of them came as the result of shenanigans and interference. And while it sucks, that’s nothing to hang your head about.
There’s been a lot of standout stars in this RISE Grand Prix. And I don’t know about you all, but I’m willing to put Midori in that list. There’s a reason why she is one-third of the JET Trios Champions. The girl has got the talent, she’s just got to relax and let her game to her.
Once that happens?
JET is going to be in big trouble. I think this tournament has been proof enough.
The final two rounds of the group stage are going to be held on Oct. 12th and Oct. 13th. I’ll be in attendance, of course. Afterwards, I’ll bring you all the juicy coverage. Goodbye, for now!
